Visions & Values

OUR ORGANIZATIONAL VALUES

We are our performers, in all their diversity, and through that diversity we have strength. Our binding dynamic is the authenticity of our ensemble, each physical actor is different, and we celebrate those differences which makes us whole.

The spaces that we inhabit, in rehearsal or in performance, are spaces of safety and respect. We are collaborators. We are there for one another and we care for one another not only as professionals but as people. There are no leads, no minor players. We support each other as fellow artists and as fellow creative people.

We support and respect one another. If someone falls, we pick them up. If someone makes an error, we learn together how to correct that error.

No question is dumb, and all questions should be asked. No idea is dumb, and all ideas should be articulated and welcomed.

We maintain transparency in all facets of our work. We communicate – we talk to one another. There are no fiefdoms or cliques. We share information. We strive to be a good neighbor in our local community.

Most importantly, our workplace is a place of joy. Hard work can and should be always combined with fun – we should never dread coming to work, to a performance, to a meeting, to a rehearsal, to a class, to an event, for if at the end of the day we’re not having some fun we’re doing something wrong. None of the above is worth doing or embracing unless we embrace what we’re doing with joy!

OUR MISSION

APT, American Physical Theater, is a theatrical performing arts company comprised of physical actors whose purpose is to engender emotions and feelings within our audience through the power of our performances. Our unique company has many diverse voices, and it is through the combination of those voices that we enrich the theatrical experiences we offer to the public.

APT lives in the cultural landscape of its time, and it adds value to the community at large by bearing truths, challenging norms, and subscribing to a level of professionalism of the highest order.

APT shares its artistic philosophy, vision, and values through its performances, its programs, its teachings, and reaches out to the widest possible audience by breaking down cultural and linguistic barriers within the international language of the human body.

ARTISTIC VISION

We begin with silence. Then we trace the arc of our expression through motivated movement, our truth articulated by our acting and physicality. As we add sound, the color of our voices, the resonance of music, the vibration, the hum of our natural world; we pierce the darkness with light and pictures, we intertwine ourselves among the theatrical sculptures placed on stage, and tell our stories raw and unfiltered in the uniqueness of us, the exceptionality of each individual alone and combined, forming this rare and original performing collective.

This is APT / American Physical Theater.

APT, led by Arthur Yorinks, was founded on the idea of combining and melding the theatrical arts of acting and movement, and it is this core conceit upon which all our work is based. APT is not language driven; it is primarily a physical communication layered with sound, the spoken word, music and pictures.

We focus on the human condition – we are about people, not intellectual ideas. We are constantly evolving our artform, we share skills, we open ourselves to each other to define and redefine ourselves under the leadership of our artistic director. We invite and embrace our creative collaborators, our composers, our writers, our co-directors to join us. And though our primary world is one of silence, not spoken dialogue, we employ vocalization, sound effects, costumes, set pieces, music and all manner of audio and visual communication.
